The Traditional Lathmar Holi of Brij
As the romantic season of spring marks its end, to farewell it comes the finest celebration of one of the most popular festivals of the country – Holi. Celebrated in last February or early in the March the 2-days annual festival of colour, Holi is undoubtedly the most colourful and exciting festival among all festivals celebrated worldwide. .

Symbolising the victory of good over evil, the colourful festival of Holi has ancient origin, which associates the festival with many of popular mythologies. Popular legends have it that the festival marks the death of Holika, sister of demon king Hiranyakashyipu, and signify the triumph of goodness over evil. Though the festival is celebrated by Hindus all over the world, but Sikhs and Jains also celebrate the fest with intense joy.

Fun and frolic are at its best during the festival of Holi. A festival full of colours make the whole nation forget all their envy and malice, and walk arms-in-arms in complete gay. Attending the auspicious public bonfire takes place in the night of first day of celebration, which signifies the defeat of evil. The next day brings the colourful celebration of colours. Smearing rang and gulal (coloured water and coloured powder) on each other’s face and body, and listening to Phagwah (Holi songs) while gulping a glass of thandai (sweetened drink made of Bhang) are the best ingredient making the festival of Holi more enjoyable.

Smear colours on each other face: Rubbing and throwing coloured powder and water on your friends and family is the essence of this colourful festival. Doesn’t matter who comes in your way, drench them in pink and green.

Attend the public bonfire: The procession can’t be assumed merely as religious feat, but it is also a social and spiritual retreat, as the whole community gathers to witness the symbol of victory of goodness over evil.

Listen to Phagwah songs: Phagwah songs are rich in using the description of local language and culture, which are very amusing to hear and frisk to its tune with your friends and family.

Wet your throat with thandai: The celebration comes to full circle, when you gulp few glasses of thandai (a sweetened drink made of Bhang).
